Rien ne s&rsquo;est pass\u00e9, sauf quelque chose comme $40, $250 ou $400 milliards que cette affaire co\u00fbta aux uns et aux autres pour faire les changements. (A cette occasion, il y eut d&rsquo;ailleurs la plus belle alerte terroriste qu&rsquo;on pouvait imaginer, des bruits de menace partout, des pr\u00e9cautions et ainsi de suite, aux States \u00e9videmment, au coeur de l&rsquo;hyperpuissance. On se prend \u00e0 regretter que Ben Laden, qui existait d\u00e9j\u00e0, n&rsquo;en ait pas profit\u00e9 pour attaquer.)<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\tMaintenant, il y a la guerre. C&rsquo;est-\u00e0-dire, cette guerre, l\u00e0, en Afghanistan, terrible, formidable, la premi\u00e8re guerre de la plus Grande Guerre de tous les temps, dans tous les cas la Grande Guerre du XXIe si\u00e8cle. Paul Wolfowitz, le terrible <em>neo-con<\/em> du Pentagone, le n\u00b02 du non-moins terrible secdef Don Rumsfeld, nous dit de cette guerre qu&rsquo;elle est comme ceci (extrait d&rsquo;un texte de Gerry J. Gilmore, AFPS, du 15 mai 2002) :<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00ab <strong><em>\u00a0\u00bbI think we&rsquo;ve made terrific progress. It&rsquo;s quite impressive,\u00a0\u00bb Wolfowitz observed at a news conference in the National Press Club. American and coalition military operations in Afghanistan &#8211; Operation Enduring Freedom &#8211; began last October. Wolfowitz praised the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, Army Gen. Tommy Franks, and his staff, noting they \u00a0\u00bbput together a plan out of nothing\u00a0\u00bb in a few weeks. Following that plan, U.S. and coalition troops liberated the city of Mazar-e Sharif in northern Afghanistan in five or six weeks, Wolfowitz said. \u00a0\u00bbIt&rsquo;s testimony to what our men and women in uniform can do &#8211; it&rsquo;s incredible,\u00a0\u00bb the deputy defense secretary said.<\/em><\/strong> \u00bb<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\tC&rsquo;est non seulement \u00ab <strong><em>incredible<\/em><\/strong> \u00bb, mon cher Paul, qu&rsquo;en plus nous l&rsquo;avons raffin\u00e9e, cette guerre, au point o\u00f9 \u00e7a ne t\u00e2che pas et o\u00f9 c&rsquo;est propre comme un sou neuf. Ils nous pardonneront, le <em>Guardian<\/em> et lui, parce qu&rsquo;ils ont l&rsquo;humour britannique, cela se lit, ils nous pardonneront ce petit emprunt sans cons\u00e9quence.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00ab <strong><em>Perhaps the 21st century will not be as desolate and bloodthirsty as we had all feared. Quite apart from the Bush-Putin deal on nuclear weapons, which is cheering, we also have Operation Snipe &#8211; a new, gentler form of warfare that keeps everybody happy, including, rather touchingly, the enemy.<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb <strong><em>Six weeks ago, some 1,800 Royal Marines were dispatched to south-eastern Afghanistan to search and destroy al-Qaida fighters who had, in a most obliging fashion, left the area some time before.<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb <strong><em>Since then, the marines have met only bemused shepherds as they yomped up and down hills, poked around in a few caves and had a sort of private fireworks party with some ammunition left over from the fight against the Russians. Every now and then someone thinks they&rsquo;ve found the body of Osama bin Laden, but it later turns out to be a goat, or a Canadian.<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb <strong><em>The complete and utter lack of anybody to kill has been heralded by the Royal Marines&rsquo; commander, Brigadier Roger Lane, thus: \u00a0\u00bb&#8230; from a strategic perspective, this is an encouraging sign\u00a0\u00bb.<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb <strong><em>Indeed, and from every other perspective, too. In fact the most onerous chore facing the squaddies is the rather tiresome daily display for the benefit of the television cameras: peering menacingly down the end of a rifle at a tree, clambering in and out of helicopters, and so on.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb <strong><em>Nobody has been hurt. There have been no war crimes; no military miscalculations and resultant \u00a0\u00bbcollateral damage\u00a0\u00bb.
