For example, in Europe we have the Gripen fighter, Rafale and Eurofighter with many signing up for the US Joint Strike Fighter. Now it is obvious the taxpayer is being served badly, Edwards said.<\/em> <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb <em>With the creation of the European Defence Agency (EDA), which aims to foster greater defence collaboration to meet requirements identified in the 2003 European Security Strategy, there needed to be debate in the UK about closer involvement with Europe, Edwards said.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t(&#8230;)<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb <em>Edwards said because of the UK&rsquo;s over-reliance on the US, France had stolen a march on it and was now the leader of the European defence industrial base.<\/em> <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb <em>The French government can be counted on for other countries of Europe but the UK will have to let go of its relationship with the US. They are going to have to accept that they will have to co-operate with French companies who will have links to the French government.<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><p>\tL&rsquo;intervention d&rsquo;Edwards est marqu\u00e9e par une franchise extraordinaire, surtout pour qui conna\u00eet la discr\u00e9tion britannique, proverbiale dans les cas de grande crise. Il faut que la crise ait d\u00e9pass\u00e9 ce stade d&rsquo;\u00eatre grande, qu&rsquo;elle soit immense et proche de son point de fusion pour que de telles phrases soient prononc\u00e9es, pour que de telles options (abandonner les relations sp\u00e9ciales avec les USA) soient dites et r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\tIl faut \u00eatre attentif \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9volution britannique <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dedefensa.org\/article.php?art_id=1490\" class=\"gen\">peut-\u00eatre d\u00e9j\u00e0 en cours, dans tous les cas ces prochains mois, surtout durant la pr\u00e9sidence britannique<\/a> de l&rsquo;UE (1er juillet-31 d\u00e9cembre). Il faut \u00eatre aussi attentif \u00e0 la concr\u00e9tisation \u00e9ventuelle de la proposition centrale de Edwards : \u00ab <em>there needed to be debate in the UK about closer involvement with Europe<\/em> \u00bb,  qui est une chose bien diff\u00e9rente des d\u00e9bats divers sur l&rsquo;Europe auxquels on assiste aujourd&rsquo;hui. Un tel d\u00e9bat au Royaume-Uni, \u00e9videmment li\u00e9 \u00e0 la condition qu&rsquo;\u00e9voque Edwards \u00ab <strong><em>to abandon<\/em><\/strong> <em>its special relationship with the US<\/em> \u00bb (noter la force du terme <em>to abandon<\/em>, soulign\u00e9 par nous-m\u00eames), repr\u00e9sente la perspective de la plus formidable r\u00e9volution strat\u00e9gique et politique au Royaume-Uni depuis 1940-41.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\tOn comprend que cette perspective n&rsquo;est pas \u00e9voqu\u00e9e gratuitement (!). C&rsquo;est, aujourd&rsquo;hui, la pression des \u00e9v\u00e9nements, essentiellement venus d&rsquo;Outre-Atlantique, qui conduit des responsables britanniques \u00e0 poser cr\u00fbment le probl\u00e8me central de la strat\u00e9gie et de la politique du Royaume-Uni. Si l&rsquo;\u00e9volution envisag\u00e9e se concr\u00e9tise, il s&rsquo;agira d&rsquo;un \u00e9v\u00e9nement potentiel qui bouleversera l&rsquo;Occident et la structure de l&rsquo;Europe. Le d\u00e9bat engag\u00e9 en France \u00e0 l&rsquo;occasion du r\u00e9f\u00e9rendum ne peut plus d\u00e9sormais \u00eatre poursuivi sans cette r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 cette \u00e9volution potentielle des Britanniques.
