The International Herald Tribune aujourd’hui<\/a>:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\u00ab A visit to Poland by the German opposition leader, Angela Merkel, aimed at raising her profile before the national elections, got off to a shaky start Tuesday after President Aleksander Kwasniewski criticized plans by Berlin to build a memorial center to Germans expelled from Eastern Europe after World War II.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\u00bb Kwasniewski, who steps down in October, a month after parliamentary elections, said the idea of a memorial could give the impression that Berlin wanted to rewrite history. More than 12 million Germans were displaced or expelled after 1945 when the Communists took power in Eastern Europe. Our attitude toward the center for the displaced in Berlin is negative, Kwasniewski said on Polish public radio hours before Merkel broke off her own election campaign to hold talks with Kwasniewski, Prime Minister Marek Belka and the leader of the conservative Civic Platform, Donald Tusk, whose party is leading in public opinion polls.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\u00bb Merkel’s visit is also partly an effort to increase her experience in foreign policy. She is the clear front-runner to become Germany’s next chancellor. Kwasniewski, a former communist youth leader, told her: Such a center would naturally focus attention on the wrongs inflicted on Germans. It would be perceived in countries such as the Czech Republic, Poland and others which were victims of Nazism as an attempt to rewrite history. We cannot accept it.<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
