D’aucuns le prennent s\u00e9rieusement: le site WSWS.org voit aujourd’hui<\/a> dans l’annonce par GW qu’il luttera contre la grippe aviaire par la force des armes un nouveau pas vers la militarisation des USA. C’est une th\u00e8se qui fait bien de l’honneur aux capacit\u00e9s intellectuelles de cette bande (l’administration GW).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\tD’autres ont une approche plus sceptique, plus ironique et pleine de d\u00e9rision, devant cette administration incroyable qui brandit des marteaux-pilons \u00e9pouvantables de puissance pour \u00e9craser des mouches (et les rater en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, et se faire prendre avec son marteau-pilon qui marche si mal dans des pi\u00e8ges relevant de la pr\u00e9histoire de la guerre). Cette approche-l\u00e0 ne nous est pas antipathique du tout. C’est celle de notre ami Tom Engelhardt, \u00e0 qui nous empruntons (dans un texte qu’il publie hier<\/a>) deux paragraphes. On y trouve effectivement cette ironie d\u00e9risoire qui est la seule chose, toutes r\u00e9flexions faites, que m\u00e9rite le gouvernement le plus vaniteux et le plus incomp\u00e9tent \u00e0 la fois qu’ait jamais connu la plan\u00e8te terre.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\t\u00ab The President finally responded to the danger of avian flu at his news conference Tuesday by suggesting, If we had an outbreak somewhere in the United States, do we not then quarantine that part of the country, and how do you then enforce a quarantine?… And who best to be able to effect quarantine? One option is the use of a military that’s able to plan and move. There’s no surprise in this. The Bush administration, facing any crisis, automatically reaches for its guns as if it were always poised at some eternal OK Corral. Think of the President’s response to a potential pandemic as public health as coup d’\u00e9tat.<\/em> <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\t\u00bb On Thursday, Bush gave his millionth speech on his Global War on Terror (and his war in Iraq). This was a day when, on the front page of the New York Times, reporter Gina Kolata broke a story about the 1918 flu virus that created a global pandemic, killing perhaps 50 million people. (Some historians believe that, even in that era before air travel, the numbers may still have approached 100 million.) According to two teams of scientists who have reconstructed that virus, it was, to the surprise of all, a bird flu that jumped directly to humans. A friend of mine, in a private e-letter he sends out, just wrote: One one-hundredth of the money we’ve spent on Iraq would help prepare us against an avian flu pandemic. But now we will be told we need to spend money on the war against terror cells in the Philippines, Indonesia and, no doubt, Canada. Maybe Bush ought to declare war against birds.<\/em> \u00bb<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
