\t\u00abIn a post-Cold War world, some might argue that Nato has simply outlived its usefulness. Nothing could be further from the truth. Russia’s ruthlessly tightening grip on Europe’s energy supplies (as well as recent, murky events in the heart of our own capital) should warn the democracies of the West to remain on their guard, notwithstanding Russia’s partnership relationship with Nato. The very venue of the summit testifies to that. The ex-communist states of eastern Europe were desperate to sign up to the alliance and are its most committed supporters precisely because they are so conscious of Russia’s ability to intimidate.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\u00bbIf Nato’s leaders are to revitalise what has been one of the most effective international organisations in history, they must bury the divisions of the past five years and at the same time start to take the non-military but potentially menacing threat posed by a resurgent and aggressive Russia with deadly seriousness.<\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
