(Sidney Blumenthal est en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral bien inform\u00e9 sur le monde politique washingtonien.) C&rsquo;est un texte consacr\u00e9 \u00e0 John McCain, le s\u00e9nateur r\u00e9publicain qui reste le favori pour le parti r\u00e9publicain, pour les \u00e9lections pr\u00e9sidentielles de 2008. Sa publication r\u00e9pond \u00e0 un d\u00e9sir de son auteur d&rsquo;\u00e9clairer une personnalit\u00e9 jug\u00e9e dangereuse.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\tEffectivement, les probabilit\u00e9s actuelles pour les pr\u00e9sidentielles de 2008 nous disent que nous avons, d&rsquo;un c\u00f4t\u00e9, une sorte de <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dedefensa.org\/article.php?art_id=3633\" class=\"gen\">Lady McBeth<\/a> (Hillary), selon Gerald Baker du <em>Times<\/em>. Et de l&rsquo;autre? Othello? Richard III? Le portrait que Blumenthal trace de McCain ne nous rend pas optimistes. Il s&rsquo;agit d&rsquo;un caract\u00e8re tr\u00e8s instable, finalement assez vuln\u00e9rable et manipulable, \u00e9galement violent, pouss\u00e9 \u00e0 l&rsquo;extr\u00e9misme, d&rsquo;un personnage \u00e0 la fois d\u00e9magogique et cultivant une singularit\u00e9 qui implique sa d\u00e9fiance de la prise de responsabilit\u00e9s. On voit mal qu&rsquo;il s&rsquo;agisse l\u00e0 du portrait id\u00e9al de pr\u00e9sident.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\tBlumenthal : \u00ab<em>His war story  a bomber pilot shot down over North Vietnam in 1967, held prisoner for five years and tortured  is the basis of his legend as morally courageous, authentic, unwavering in his convictions, an independent reformer willing to take on the reactionaries of his own party, an American maverick as he calls himself in his campaign autobiography.<\/em> []<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>McCain&rsquo;s political colleagues, however, know another side of the action hero  a volatile man with a hair-trigger temper, who shouted at Senator Ted Kennedy on the Senate floor to shut up, and called fellow Republican senators shithead &#8230; fucking jerk &#8230; asshole. A few months ago, McCain suddenly rushed up to a friend of mine, a prominent Washington lawyer, at a social event, and threatened to beat him up because he represented a client McCain happened to dislike. Then, just as suddenly, profusely and tearfully, he apologised.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>Many Republicans who have had dealings with McCain distrust him (not just conservatives but traditional Republican moderates too). While taking rightwing positions on social issues such as abortion and gay marriage, his simmering resentment of Bush led him virtually to caucus with the Democrats in early 2001 (before September 11). Then, abruptly, he rushed to embrace Bush.<\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\tMcCain a \u00e9volu\u00e9 de plus en plus vers la droite ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, \u00e0 partir d&rsquo;une tendance fonci\u00e8rement belliciste (il a rompu de la ligne de son parti en 1999 et s&rsquo;est associ\u00e9 aux d\u00e9mocrates pour soutenir la guerre du Kosovo de Bill Clinton). Il s&rsquo;est rapproch\u00e9 des n\u00e9o-conservateurs \u00e0 mesure que ceux-ci \u00e9taient \u00e9cart\u00e9s du pouvoir. Ses positions sont aujourd&rsquo;hui celles d&rsquo;un super-faucon, plus \u00e0 droite que GW Bush: \u00ab<em>As the neoconservatives abandoned Bush&rsquo;s sinking ship, McCain welcomed them aboard. McCain began reading the Weekly Standard and conferring with its editors, particularly Bill Kristol, the New Republic magazine reported. And he hired a board member of the neocon Project for the New American Century, Randy Scheunemann, as his foreign-policy aide. McCain positioned himself as consistently belligerent, even to Bush&rsquo;s right: in favour of bombing Iran and North Korea. He also proposed a surge of troops into Iraq, an idea gleaned from the neocons<\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\tTr\u00e8s curieusement, McCain a une position \u00e9lectorale tactique inverse de celle de Hillary Clinton. Alors qu&rsquo;on estime que Hillary doit pouvoir emporter sans probl\u00e8me la d\u00e9signation d\u00e9mocrate mais qu&rsquo;elle aurait beaucoup de difficult\u00e9s \u00e0 remporter l&rsquo;\u00e9lection \u00e0 cause des sentiments hostiles qu&rsquo;elle suscite, l&rsquo;inverse semblerait juste pour McCain. Il a (aurait) beaucoup de chances d&#8217;emporter l&rsquo;\u00e9lection nationale mais beaucoup de difficult\u00e9s \u00e0 se faire d\u00e9signer par son parti.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\tLes deux principaux candidats pour 2008 sont caract\u00e9ris\u00e9s par des positions et des comportements extr\u00eames, radicaux, avec certaines situations de blocage inattendues dans leurs perspectives politiques.
