This is in spite of the British accounting for almost 10 per cent of the population in my area.

»And especially in spite of the fact that those Brits tend to be Mail or Telegraph-reading types who are not desperately bright nor sensitive to local feelings. I remember laughing out loud the first time an ex-pat told me her three reasons for moving down here: to cash in the equity in her house, to enjoy a lower cost of living and to escape all the economic migrants who were swamping England. I really thought she was joking. But many Brits down here say that they’ve come partly to get away from the ruin caused to Britain by immigration.

»Which is ironic, really, because the French government says that 13 per cent of those living in France are either first generation immigrants or foreign nationals. That figure is much higher than any credible ones I have seen for the UK. Meanwhile, Migration International says that more than 20 per cent of the French population has at least one foreign parent or grandparent. So even allowing for their breathtaking lack of self awareness about their own statuses, my ex-pat friends aren’t really escaping immigration, are they?

»They go on to moan about how Britain is losing its culture. It’s true that France’s traditional attitudes, values and way of life are considerably more intact than the UK’s. And certainly the mainstream population respects and admires French literature, philosophy, music, cuisine, terroir, cinema and so on in a way that our proud-to-be-dumb masses simply would not recognise.

»But this relative cultural purity cannot be a result of French blood being undiluted by immigration. According to Tony McNeil of the University of Sunderland: …over the last two hundred years, France has received more immigrants than any other European country. By 1930 in fact, France had a higher percentage of foreigners in its population than the United States.

»So by all means come to live in France.
