Kennedy and Ronald Reagan.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>He&rsquo;s Nicolas Sarkozy, and he&rsquo;s just back from testing the waters in New Hampshire  by canoe. Unfortunately for his stateside admirers, Sarkozy already has a new job, as president of France.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>Yes, France. You know, that land of layabouts and liberals.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>This is the country it has been fashionable to despise  and be despised by  since Paris and Washington fell out over the Iraq war. It&rsquo;s drawing new respect, thanks to the election of a friendly leader with to-die-for approval ratings.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>Sarkozy is so bullish on the U.S. he&rsquo;s known as Sarko the American. He risked flak at home by taking his first vacation as president on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, where a French magazine photo helpfully airbrushed his modest love handles away.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>Presidential candidates are bullish on him, some to the point of gaga.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>Even Mitt Romney, the only GOP candidate capable of insulting France in fluent French, thinks Sarkozy might be a blood brother.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>John McCain has met him at least twice. Rudy Giuliani feels a special kinship with the conservative Frenchman because Sarkozy was once his country&rsquo;s top cop, and because another nickname for the president is the French Rudy.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>Giuliani said this week he&rsquo;s reading Sarkozy&rsquo;s book, Testimony, already the subject of a glowing Newt Gingrich column. Giuliani credits Sarkozy with taking essential, quintessential American principles and trying to put them into effect in France to create economic growth. And then some  he also wants to abolish taxes on overtime, so the French will work harder.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>It&rsquo;s the John F. Kennedy model, or the Ronald Reagan model, or the Nicolas Sarkozy model, Giuliani said on CNBC.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>If Democrats aren&rsquo;t quite as quick to cozy to Sarkozy, they seem intrigued. After all, the right in Europe can be close ideologically to the left, or at least the center, in the United States. Barack Obama met him a year ago and Hillary Rodham Clinton was going to but that fell through, French officials said.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>It&rsquo;s rare enough for a U.S. political campaign to concern itself with anyone abroad unless that person is ripe for vilification, like the late Saddam Hussein or the missing Osama bin Laden. It&rsquo;s rarer still to see a foreign leader presented as a guidepost for America&rsquo;s future.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>And a Frenchman? Mon Dieu!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>Among those who consider Sarkozy a beacon is Gingrich, who has belittled the presidential field of fellow Republicans as a collection of pygmies and might join the race.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>France proves change is possible in a country whose special interests are even more entrenched than ours, he wrote. He called Sarkozy a courageous leader who has shown how to run the boldest campaign in our lifetime.<\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\tCette mont\u00e9e d&rsquo;adr\u00e9lanine et cette pouss\u00e9e de fi\u00e8vre mesurent la profondeur des engouements et de l&rsquo;\u00e9volution des soi-disant proximit\u00e9s soudaines entre alli\u00e9s. La popularit\u00e9 presque hyst\u00e9rique de Sarko vaut la haine compl\u00e8tement hyst\u00e9rique contre les <em> Cheese-eating surrender monkeys<\/em> du temps des <em>neocons<\/em> en 2002-2003. Sarko vaut Bardot, selon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dedefensa.org\/article.php?art_id=4373\" class=\"gen\">Gopkin<\/a> : \u00ab<MII>This makes his<D> [Sarkozy&rsquo;s] <em>aura in France very different from his aura in America, where no French personality since Brigitte Bardot has been such a projection screen for wishful dreams and onanistic fantasies.<\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\tCertainement, cette sorte d&rsquo;engouement a toujours exist\u00e9, sans consistance ni r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 quoi que ce soit. Il ne dit rien sur la profondeur de son objet, ni en bien ni en mal. Mais sa brutalit\u00e9, son \u00e9pid\u00e9mie conformiste, son caract\u00e8re automatique, m\u00e9canique, en disent long sur la qualit\u00e9 du monde politique de ce temps historique-l\u00e0. Pour une fois, il n&rsquo;y aura aucune r\u00e9ticence \u00e0 mettre dans le m\u00eame sac transatlantique les politiciens des deux bords de l&rsquo;Oc\u00e9an. La grossi\u00e8ret\u00e9 de la vogue, son irrationalit\u00e9 primaire, son lien \u00e9troit avec le monde de la pub et des <em>people<\/em> en fixent les path\u00e9tiques limites. Il n&rsquo;y a aucun jugement politique \u00e0 sortir, tout juste le constat que, dans les murs politiciennes actuelles, cela pourrait <strong>m\u00eame<\/strong> avoir un impact politique s\u00e9rieux, par simple m\u00e9canique de l&rsquo;exploitaion de la notori\u00e9t\u00e9, pour qui a le go\u00fbt des manuvres tactiques brutales,  cas de Sarko, sans aucun doute. Bien des Fran\u00e7ais, sensible \u00e0 leur fascination pour l&rsquo;<em>American Dream<\/em>, se rengorgeront sans pudeur. Et puis, terminons par un mot de compassion pour le grand perdant de l&rsquo;affaire, Tony Blair, qui perd son incontestable premi\u00e8re place dans la course aux apparences du <em>darling<\/em> de ces messieurs-dames.
