«For all the fashion that wealth creators are supposed to be experts on foreign policy, international security, climate change and all those other things that now come as part of the global business leader approved package, it is still money that talks. And yet, oddly enough, there is a sense of unhealthy bourgeois guilt underpinning the whole Davos experience. Some who come here are refreshingly honest enough to say they hope to meet a leading fixer from some burgeoning economy or other, and persuade him to go back to his president and allow a Western franchise to operate there. Others, though, come because they genuinely do believe that talking earnestly about alleviating poverty, or arresting climate change, or making Muslims love Christians and Jews, really will make these things happen.

»Well, if it makes them feel better about themselves, it is a harmless enough pastime. They should just not take it, and themselves, too seriously. All those years spent talking about the inexorable triumph of wealth creation did not stop a hell of a lot of it being uncreated earlier this week. It won’t stop international housing slumps, stock market crashes, currency collapses and all the other economic horrors that look set to be inflicted on the world before its leaders find themselves on the slopes here next January.

«If that gave some of them cause to feel less smug and, quite possibly, marginally less self-important, then the realism it might provoke could actually help this club achieve something more than just throwing a good party.»
