Cette composition assez inhabituelle, cet appel \u00e0 des personnalit\u00e9s de poids en influence mais peu en position institutionnelle, comme Edwards et Gore, marque l’urgence de la chose. Il s’agit de rassembler le parti, en commen\u00e7ant par le haut, par les voies institutionnelles autant que par les influences les plus fortes. L’obsession de ces dirigeants du parti d\u00e9mocrate semble \u00eatre effectivement : \u00e9viter \u00e0 tout prix une bataille pour la d\u00e9signation \u00e0 la Convention du parti en ao\u00fbt, qui pourrait d\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9rer et rappeler de mauvais souvenirs (Convention de Chicago, en 1968, marqu\u00e9e de tr\u00e8s violents incidents); une bataille qui pourrait par cons\u00e9quent condamner par avance le candidat d\u00e9mocrate, quel qu’il soit, supportant le handicap de la division du parti.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\u00b6\u00abBarack Obama’s hopes of emerging as the first black Democratic presidential nominee could now depend on top party officials intervening to stop the fight with Hillary Clinton in the name of unity.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\u00bbThe focus of the Democratic race has shifted to Indiana and North Carolina where Mr Obama is favoured to win in the early May primaries. But victory in these states will still leave him short of winning the nomination and allow the damaging battle with Mrs Clinton to continue through the summer. A defeat could be fatal for his chances.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\u00bbOne idea being floated is for a so-called Gang of Four comprising the former presidential hopeful John Edwards; the former vice-president Al Gore; the Democratic Party leader Howard Dean; and the House speaker Nancy Pelosi to intervene after the primaries on 6 May. They would then call on the superdelegates to make a commitment within 10 days so that the party can have a nominee before the August convention in Denver. At that stage, the Obama campaign hopes to have won 2,025 delegates, enough to secure him the nomination. Mrs Clinton could still thwart him if she persuades enough superdelegates to back her on the grounds that she is a tougher, more effective candidate who would carry more states in the presidential race.<\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
