American bombs, American planes, and American idleness, all lead rage in the Muslim world to be directed at the far enemy in addition to Israel. As Lawrence Wright often remarks, if the Israeli-Palestinian crisis were resolved tomorrow, bin Laden would be heartbroken. And it&rsquo;s unusually fierce. This week, some jarring events made headlines and illustrated the nature of that war:<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em> Hugely popular comedian Jon Stewart, who is Jewish  birth name, Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz  was lauded by the Muslim Public Affairs Council this week for a scathing Daily Show&rsquo; segment entitled, Israel Invades Gaza &#8230; Missile Tov! The Comedy Central host, noting that rockets lobbed from Hamas into Israel are not new, posed the question, Why does Israel feel that they have to react so strongly right now? Answer: the Obama inauguration. I get it. &#8230; Israel gets their bombing in before the Jan. 20 hope and change&rsquo; deadline &#8230; it&rsquo;s like a civilian carnage Toyota-thon! he said to roars of approval from his audience.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\t\u00bb<em>  In San Francisco, Jewish protesters joined pro-Palestinian forces this week as hundreds gathered outside the Israeli consulate to make their voices heard, some carrying signs saying Gaza = Warsaw Ghetto. Among them was Jack Fertig &#8211; known to many in town as performance artist Sister Boom Boom &#8211; who said, I&rsquo;m descended from Holocaust victims, and we need to identify with the oppressed, not imitate the oppressors.<\/em>\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\tL&rsquo;article observe que l&rsquo;opposition \u00e0 l&rsquo;action d&rsquo;Isra\u00ebl \u00e0 Gaza, et \u00e0 la politique militariste d&rsquo;Isra\u00ebl, est maintenant significative dans la communaut\u00e9 juive US. Dans ce pays au conformisme tr\u00e8s grand, une politique officielle active, m\u00eame pro-isra\u00e9lienne \u00e0 100%, tend \u00e0 contenir une partie des r\u00e9actions publiques, ou \u00e0 les faire consid\u00e9rer comme dissidentes lorsqu&rsquo;elles sont oppos\u00e9es \u00e0 cette politique officielle; l&rsquo;absence de politique officielle, au contraire, tend \u00e0 donner un certain statut, disons semi-officiel, aux r\u00e9actions populaires.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\tOn peut avancer l&rsquo;hypoth\u00e8se que c&rsquo;est justement le vide officiel, cantonnant effectivement l&rsquo;attitude politique de Washington \u00e0 des automatismes indignes, qui ouvre le champ \u00e0 ces r\u00e9actions populaires qui ne sont pas sans effet structurant puisque des associations qui commencent \u00e0 avoir de l&rsquo;importance affirment \u00e0 cette occasion leur pr\u00e9sence et leur poids (les associations juives critiques d&rsquo;Isra\u00ebl <em>J-Street Project<\/em> et <em>Americans for Peace Now<\/em>). Un mouvement d&rsquo;opinion structur\u00e9, avec des relais efficaces vers Washington et une forte participation de la communaut\u00e9 juive, commence ainsi \u00e0 se mettre en place. Il pourrait constituer une base d&rsquo;influence qui, \u00e0 son tour, pourrait faire sentir ses effets au niveau politique; cet effet pourrait \u00e9galement se manifester assez rapidement, \u00e0 la faveur du changement de pouvoir, et encore plus rapidement bien s\u00fbr si l&rsquo;attaque isra\u00e9lienne se poursuit avec la violence qu&rsquo;on lui voit.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\tLes dirigeants isra\u00e9liens se sont toujours appuy\u00e9s sur leur \u00e9norme influence \u00e0 Washington, pour conduire leur politique. Ils tiennent cette influence pour acquise, s&rsquo;en tenant aux prises de position conformes actuelles. Mais peut-\u00eatre ne voient-ils pas le changement qui est en train de s&rsquo;op\u00e9rer, notamment avec ses effets sur les structures d&rsquo;influence en voie de modification.
