Il s’agit moins de faire des propositions, m\u00eame sans beaucoup d’espoir qu’elles se r\u00e9alisent, que de s’en remettre \u00e0 une sorte d’incantation, r\u00e9v\u00e9lant l’\u00e9tat du jugement d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9 sur la situation des USA qui caract\u00e9rise l’esprit de Harlan Ullman. Il \u00e9crit sa chronique en se rem\u00e9morant une occasion sociale, en 1976, \u00e0 une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 la situation psychologique et institutionnelle int\u00e9rieure des USA \u00e9tait dans un \u00e9tat catastrophique, trace la parall\u00e8le au travers de la description des crises actuelles qui touchent les USA, pour finir par la seule issue qu’il trouve \u00e0 son analyse, simplement, une incantation<\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\u00abNo wonder Americans are entering a winter of discontent<\/em> []<\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\u00bbMy late and great mother-in-law had a simple answer to these matters. Shortly before she left his world for a better place, she was visiting her then newly married daughter in Washington some 35 years ago. We were living well above our station and had several fancy dinner parties for her.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\u00bbIt was 1976 and American was in a blue funk. A president had been forced to resign in face of impeachment or worse. Vietnam was an ignominious defeat, America’s first, with the image of the last helicopter fleeing the U.S. Embassy in Saigon visibly etched in the psyches of many of us who fought there. The military was held in contempt, government was disrespected and the economy was in tatters, still suffering from the Arab oil embargo of late 1973 in the wake of the Yom Kippur War that October<\/em> []<\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\u00bbOver dinner, the conversation turned to these dismal matters and general pessimism enshrouding the nation. My mother-in-law, married to a British law lord, took great exception to the bleak proceedings. Reminding us of the Great Depression in England and the sacrifices Britons made during World War II, this diminutive lady turned to an admiral or senator seated next to her with formidable intellect and spunk saying, You Americans must simply buck up!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\u00bbWhen we consider what our forbearers endured from the first colonists who faced pestilence, famine, drought and many other privations including hostile American Indians not anxious to have their lands confiscated by foreign invaders, are we so worse off today? The American Revolution and Civil War were times of real crisis as were the Great Depression and Pearl Harbor.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\u00bbAmerica was indeed lucky that for some five decades after World War II, the country enjoyed the advantages and benefits of its unprecedented economic and military superpower status. The American dream was real and was obtainable. Today, that legacy no longer exists. In blunt terms, Americans have spent or wasted the inheritance from prior generations.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\u00bbDenial is often the first response to reports of danger. And many of us are in denial in believing that our situation is<\/em> more desperate or dangerous than in any time in our history<\/em><\/strong>. L’autre r\u00e9action est celle qu’il illustre, qui est plus rationnelle parce que nullement hyst\u00e9rique, qui est la r\u00e9action de l’incompr\u00e9hension et de la disparition implicite de tout espoir rationnel de redressement. Effectivement, autant en revenir dans ce cas au conseil imp\u00e9ratif d’une grand’m\u00e8re, Du nerf, relevez-vous et en avant !. Tout cela para\u00eet simple au point d’\u00eatre simpliste, mais nullement d\u00e9nu\u00e9 d’un sens extr\u00eamement profond. Effectivement, l’exhortation, ou plut\u00f4t l’incantation puisque la r\u00e9f\u00e9rence est celle d’une situation pass\u00e9e o\u00f9 l’on pouvait croire que l’exhortation avait encore quelque pouvoir alors qu’on pourrait penser que la chose n’a plus cours actuellement, l’exhortation semble \u00eatre justifi\u00e9e comme sujet de la r\u00e9flexion dans la mesure o\u00f9 cette attitude concerne une situation o\u00f9 quelque chose comme un \u00e9lan vital, une capacit\u00e9 de volont\u00e9 semblent avoir disparu, o\u00f9 une paralysie de la psychologie semble avoir compl\u00e8tement priv\u00e9 les USA en tant que syst\u00e8me de l’am\u00e9ricanisme, et moteur central du Syst\u00e8me tout court, de toute r\u00e9action de rel\u00e8vement.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n\tD’autre part, cette \u00e9nergie perdue, devenue introuvable, semble s’\u00eatre effectivement dissoute<\/strong> selon le terme que nous employons beaucoup, mais pour se reformer<\/strong> dans des positions d’opposition, de r\u00e9volte larv\u00e9e, de mises en cause fondamentales. Cet aspect-l\u00e0 n’est pas sp\u00e9cifiquement \u00e9voqu\u00e9 par Ullman, parce que nous ne pensons pas que l’esprit d’un homme rest\u00e9 si compl\u00e8tement proche de l’establishment<\/em> puisse effectivement envisager cette situation actuelle d’un renversement complet, en cours, de la situation psychologique de la population am\u00e9ricaine On pourrait alors arriver \u00e0 un paradoxe, qui serait effectivement une inversion dans le bon sens, de notre point de vue, o\u00f9 l’exhortation (Du nerf, relevez-vous et en avant !) soit finalement entendue et r\u00e9alis\u00e9e, mais dans le sens inverse qu’en esp\u00e8re Ullman, dans le sens de la r\u00e9volte.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
