BuzzFeed justified reporting the unverified oppo-research document — which had been compiled during the presidential campaign by a political operative working for Trump’s Republican rivals — by stating that intelligence agencies had briefed Trump on a summary of the findings last week. It is notoriously difficult to prove a negative, making it difficult for both Trump and the Russians to refute claims that it was Russian intelligence which was behind the Clinton leaks, especially given the almost complete media blackout on Craig Murray’s revelations.

» However the ‘Trump dossier’ is a different matter. That is precisely what Donald Trump did in his press conference. This approach avoids a head on clash with the US intelligence community, whilst downplaying the significance of the whole issue.
